Malahide – Our Town

Malahide, located in north County Dublin, is a twenty minute DART ride into Dublin.

Malahide participates in an annual event called Tidy Towns. The national Tidy Towns initiative was launched in 1958. It was originally part of ‘Tostal’, a nationwide festival celebrating all things Irish. A step-up from the original National Spring Clean Campaign, which ran between 1953 and 1957, Tidy Towns rapidly developed its own identity and has gone on to become Ireland’s most well known and popular local environmental initiative.

The primary focus of Tidy Towns was to encourage communities to improve their local environment and make their area a better place to live, work and visit. The competition aspect was an important element in developing friendly rivalry that would help boost standards across the board. The emphasis was always on participating rather than winning as the very act of taking part brought benefits to the community. As a result of this focus on long-term results rather than quick returns, Tidy Towns was seen as a unique and far-sighted initiative.

Although just 52 towns entered in its first year, Tidy Towns rapidly increased in popularity with an average of 700 entrants per year. Sixty years later, the initiative still retains the same core principle of its founders – “make your place a better place.”

One possible explanation for the term “Yellow Walls” is that at one time it had a popular local industry of weaving linen from flax fibers extracted from the stems of the flax plant.  In its natural state, flax fiber ranges in color from pale yellow or cream to dark brown. Raw linen woven from flax fibers naturally has a yellowish color so in order to get white linen, the fabric must be bleached. This, it is said, was done by hanging the fabric on walls in the locality to bleach in the sun, resulting in yellow stains on the stone, hence “Yellow Walls”.

Shopping Day

We were warned!  The crowds at the mall reminded us of King of Prussia Mall the weekend before Christmas.   There was a line to get into the parking lot.  You needed a ticket to park and parking will cost you if you stay over two hours.

And IKEA – forget about it – it felt like cattle-herding.  Best to abandon the shopping cart and weave in and out among the other shoppers.  So far we have made four trips to IKEA.  And in case you haven’t been there recently it’s all decked out for Christmas.

IMG_5474On the way we spotted a Krispy Kreme.  Ireland is big on donuts!  We have yet to see a bagel.  And Chuck’s favorite snack – pretzels – are a rarity.  In the giant mall supermarket, we finally found a bag or thin pretzel sticks.  They were extremely light on the salt.  I neeto bring some back on next trip home.

Interesting sightings inside the SuperValue.  I think I will pass on the wedding cake but the pancake shack inside the supermarket I want to try next time.IMG_5580IMG_5579

But then it felt like home when we spotted this.  Not TJ but TKMaxx!

At the mall kiosk, Chuck was able to get the setup equipment for cable TV.  He is a happy guy! Until we get home and he notices that the cable connection coming out of the wall is broken and we need an electrician.

Going to Galway

I marked in black a rough outline of path and put colored dots on the approx locations.

The past weekend weather looked good.  From the north – There were two options to get to the Aran Islands – ferry (25 euro round trip/40 minutes) or airplane (50 euro round trip/8 minutes).  Also could approached from Doolin (east to west) but I read waters may be rougher and the trip to Inis Mor (largest island) was over an hour each way.

So plane it was!!

Plan was Galway on Saturday, overnight at airbnb and flight to Inis Mor on Sunday.  We decided to pass on Cliffs of Mohr this time because we thought we better get in Aran Islands while the weather is good.

Up until Thursday the flights were booked for the return on Sunday.  But luckily they emailed with a cancellation on Thursday night.

Galway was fun but definitely doable in a day.  It’s the fourth most populated city in Ireland (about half million). We took a walking tour which included sites in the Ed Sheeran “Galway Girl” video.  We ended at the O’Connell pub (which was featured in beginning of video) and had a drink.

Leaving Galway we drove a few miles to our airbnb (RED dot) and stopped in the small pub for dinner.

Sunday morning and the skies are gray and the wind is howling.  We cautiously set off for the airport (GREEN dot).  Upon arrival they weigh us in to balance the plane.  The plane only seats 8.  First thing the guy says is the weather is not good, storm coming and you may have to ferry back and it could be rough.  Panic!  We proceed to tell him our plan was to bike at Inis Mor.  He confirmed our suspicion – no way was that going to happen.  Once we told his we were here for extended time he highly recommended us rescheduling at a later date.

So on to Plan B – Kylemore Abbey (Blue dot).  Lots of single lane dirt roads.  Chuck let me drive part of the way.  Don’t ask him his opinion of my driving!  Practice makes perfect, right?  And I much prefer being the navigator.

Yes, the storm arrived just as we arrived at the Abbey.  After an hour of soaking rain, the weather cleared.  The abbey and gardens were beautiful.  At the top of the mountain was a Jesus statue.  Unfortunately they were not giving assess to hike that day and they were very secretive to where the path was.

We then stopped at the Ross Errilly Friary (YELLOW dot).  This was just on the side of road and no tour or really any plagues to describe.

Sooo – that’s the scoop for now!
